Injury Prevention: What Is Viscoelasticity and Why Does It Matter?

Have you ever stood up after sitting for a long time and felt stiff or tight?
Maybe you bent over to pick something up, turned quickly, or reached for something—and suddenly felt a sharp pull in your back. Sometimes an injury can happen during a movement that seems completely harmless. Why?
One reason may be the way your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues respond to changes in movement and load. This is where viscoelasticity comes into the picture.
Understanding how your body responds to stretching, pressure, and movement can help you make better choices about warm-ups, movement breaks, exercise, and injury prevention.

What Is Viscoelasticity?
The word viscoelasticity combines two properties:
Viscosity – how a tissue responds to a force over time.
Elasticity – how a tissue can deform under a load and return toward its previous shape when the load is removed.
Many tissues in the body have viscoelastic properties, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and other connective tissues.
This means your body's response to a movement isn't determined only by how much force is applied. How quickly the force is applied and how long the tissue has been under stress also matter.
Research on muscle-tendon units has demonstrated that these tissues respond differently depending on the rate and type of loading.
Why Does Viscoelasticity Matter for Your Back?
Think about what happens when you sit at a desk for an extended period. Your body remains in essentially the same position for a long time. When you suddenly stand up, twist, bend, or reach, your muscles and other tissues have to transition from a relatively static position to movement. That doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get injured.
However, moving from prolonged inactivity directly into a demanding movement without allowing your body to adjust can make movement feel stiff or uncomfortable. This is one reason regular movement throughout the day is important. Instead of waiting until you feel stiff, try giving your body small movement breaks.
Try this:
After sitting for a while:
Stand up slowly.
Take a few comfortable steps.
Move your shoulders gently.
Rotate your torso comfortably from side to side.
Perform a few easy movements before lifting, bending, or exercising.
The goal isn't to force your body into a stretch.
The goal is to gradually get your body moving again.
Your Body Is Designed to Adapt to Movement
Your muscles and connective tissues aren't rigid structures. They continually adapt to the demands placed on them.
For example, tendons help transfer forces from muscles to bones and can store and release mechanical energy during movement. This is particularly important during activities involving running, jumping, and other movements where muscles and tendons repeatedly lengthen and shorten.
This is one reason gradual conditioning is so important.
If you normally spend most of the day sitting and then suddenly decide to:
Run several miles
Play a competitive sport
Lift something very heavy
Do an intense workout
Spend hours doing yard work
your body may not be prepared for the sudden increase in physical demand. The answer isn't necessarily more stretching.
Instead, your body generally benefits from progressive exposure to movement, strength, stability, coordination, and physical activity.
Does Stretching Prevent Injuries?
This is where things get interesting. Stretching can improve range of motion and tolerance to stretching, but it should not be considered a complete injury-prevention strategy. Current research does not support the idea that simply stretching before activity prevents all types of injuries. That doesn't mean stretching isn't useful. Stretching may be appropriate for improving flexibility and mobility, depending on the individual and the activity. But injury prevention is bigger than stretching.
A well-rounded approach can include:
1. Regular movement
Avoid staying in one position for excessively long periods.
2. Strength training
Stronger muscles can help your body handle physical demands more effectively.
3. Mobility
Maintain comfortable movement through the joints and surrounding tissues.
Your body needs to control movement—not simply produce it.
5. Gradual progression
Increase exercise intensity, duration, and workload gradually rather than making sudden changes.
6. Appropriate warm-up
Prepare your body for the activity you're about to perform.
7. Recovery
Give your body adequate time to recover between demanding activities.
Why Sudden Movements Can Sometimes Cause Pain
One of the most frustrating experiences is getting hurt while doing something that seems insignificant.
You bend down to pick up a shoe. You reach into the back seat of your car.
You twist to grab something behind you. You get out of a chair.
And suddenly—ouch!
It can feel like the movement caused the entire problem.
But the movement may simply have been the final stress placed on tissues that were already dealing with fatigue, stiffness, weakness, or an unfamiliar physical demand. This is why it can be misleading to say, "I hurt myself doing nothing."
Your body is responding to everything you've done—or haven't done—leading up to that moment.

A Simple Way to Reduce the Risk of "Too Much, Too Soon"
You don't need a complicated routine to get your body ready for movement. Before doing something physically demanding after sitting or resting for a long time, take a few moments to move first.
Try:
Stand → Walk → Move → Then Load
For example:
After sitting at your desk:
➡️ Stand up➡️ Walk around for a minute➡️ Gently rotate your torso➡️ Move your hips and shoulders➡️ Then bend, lift, or exercise
The movements should be comfortable and controlled. Avoid forcing a painful range of motion.
Viscoelasticity and Everyday Injury Prevention
Understanding viscoelasticity gives us another way to think about injury prevention. Your body isn't a machine that simply turns on and off. Your muscles and connective tissues respond to time, movement, force, repetition, and physical demand.
Instead of going from: Sitting → Maximum Effort
try: Sitting → Movement → Preparation → Activity
That small transition can help you become more aware of how your body feels and how prepared it is for the activity ahead.
