Burning Between Your Shoulder Blades? Here’s What Your Body May Be Telling You

Have you ever felt a burning or aching sensation between your shoulder blades that seems almost impossible to reach?

You stretch. You roll your shoulders. Maybe you ask someone to massage the spot—but the discomfort keeps coming back.

You're not alone.

The area between your shoulder blades works hard throughout the day. Working at a computer, driving, cooking, reading, reaching forward, or spending hours on your phone can keep the muscles of your neck and upper back working for long periods.

And while it may feel like one particular muscle is causing the problem, the source isn't always that simple.

Burning doesn't automatically mean a pinched nerve

A burning sensation can have several possible causes. Muscle tension, overuse, joint irritation, or nerve-related problems can all create different sensations.

That's why it's important to look at the whole pattern, rather than focusing only on the spot that hurts.

What should you pay attention to?

Ask yourself:

  • When does the burning start?

  • Does sitting or driving make it worse?

  • Does moving your neck or shoulders change it?

  • Is your neck hurting at the same time?

  • Does it improve with movement or rest?

  • Is it becoming more frequent?

These clues can help you—and your healthcare provider—better understand what's going on.

Start simple:

1. Change positions. Don't stay in the same position for hours.

2. Move gently. Light movement can be better than completely avoiding activity.

3. Notice your triggers. Pay attention to activities that repeatedly bring the symptoms back.

4. Don't ignore persistent pain. If the burning keeps returning or is getting worse, it's worth having it evaluated.

Your upper back is trying to tell you something. The first step is learning to listen.
